The Old Westbury Police would like to inform Old Westbury residents of a recent scam that occurred in Old Westbury. On Friday September 9, 2022 a male named “John” went up to a resident’s door to solicit a driveway paving job from the resident. The subject claimed to have "extra asphalt" on his truck and needed to use it up. The subject gave the resident a good price which was considerably lower than estimates the resident had gotten in the past from other companies. The subject claimed to be using a better product he called the “Ferrari” of asphalt and that it came with a 10-year guarantee not to crack and claimed it was not a driveway sealer. The company name that was used on a flyer given to the resident, was ABC Asphalt Construction. A quick google search will give you a legitimate company with a similar name ABC Asphalt contractors, that has good reviews. Additionally, the website listed is for a legitimate asphalt company in Arizona that does not do business in New York. It seems that is part of the deception used by this subject to fool people to think “John” has a legitimate asphalt company. The resident was not satisfied with the shoddy work that was done and did not pay “John” the full amount that was agreed upon. The resident is still out a significant amount of money as they did pay for portion of the agreed amount. The resident told “John” they would pay the rest if he came back the next day to complete the job as originally promised. The subject did not return. The subject was driving a black or blue pickup truck. The male subject “John” is a male white with an Irish accent, heavy set, 30-45 years old with a full beard and mustache.
As a reminder please be mindful of anyone trying to sell you something where you must act quickly or pay cash now. Be sure to get a contract in writing that details all the work agreed upon before starting or paying for any work done. If you encounter any similar incidents, please report it to the Old Westbury Police. If you are unsure and have someone at your house trying to sell you services call the Old Westbury Police. An officer will respond to investigate and see that it is a legitimate person or business. Please see the attached photo of the subject and the flyer that was used, to help you avoid being a victim of this scam.
Also see the attached flyer for preventing other common scams and be sure to share with your neighbors, family and friends.
