Over the past few weeks there have been a number of vehicles stolen at gas stations. The car thieves have pulled into gas stations , jumped into the drivers seat as the victim is pumping gas and drove off with the victim’s vehicle. The most recent incidents occurred at gas stations in Westbury, Roslyn Heights, Glen Head and Mineola. All of which are in close proximity to Old Westbury and likely gas stations our residents may fuel up at. The targeted vehicles in these cases were all high end vehicles. See the tips below on ways to prevent vehicle theft and protect yourself while getting gas.
-Always turn your vehicle off while getting gas. Even if you take the key-fob with you, if the car is running it can still be driven away.
-Take your key-fob with you and secure it on your person. NEVER leave the key-fob inside!
-Lock all your doors.
- Maintain an awareness of your surroundings while pumping gas, avoid using your phone or other distractions.
- Call 911 to report any suspicious people, vehicles or any other suspicious activity.
