[ARCHIVED] Message from the Chief of Police

Message from Chief Cameron

This morning I attended my first Strat Com meeting at Nassau County Police Headquarters to maximize the support that we can receive from our partner law enforcement agencies in Nassau County in order to keep all of our village residents safe.  During the meeting Commissioner Ryder mentioned that 92% of all of the vehicles that were stolen in Nassau County last year had the key fobs inside.

Many higher end vehicles will fold in the sideview mirrors automatically when they are locked, so it is easy to determine whether the car is locked simply by looking at it.  Car thieves look for this cue and then simply enter the car and attempt to start it.

Here in Old Westbury Village eleven cars were stolen last year.  Ten of those cars had the key fobs inside and the eleventh was running as it was being fueled at a gas station.

Last evening, we had our first reported car theft of 2023 and again this car had been parked with the key fob inside.  Please always take your key fobs with you and lock your cars whenever you park them to prevent them from being targeted by thieves.
