[ARCHIVED] August Monthly Update

August Monthly Update

Tropical Storm Isaias:

Full recovery from Tropical Storm Isaias is now well underway.  The recovery efforts were hampered by the lack of proper and timely communications between PSEG representatives, our residents and Village Hall. The Village in the weeks ahead, will communicate with PSEG in the effort to make needed improvements before the next weather-related event occurs and we are better prepared to support our residents.  It was also clear that improved communications with Verizon and Optimum representatives were not in place and need to be developed.

The Village’s Department of Public Works did an outstanding job opening roads within the Village following the storm and are continuing their effort to police the Village for removing storm related debris.  Residents are reminded to contact their landscapers directly since the “grace period” for placing storm related debris in the public roadway expired on Friday, August 14th.

The Village’s Police Department responded to well over 250 calls for assistance during and following the storm.  Despite the large number of trees down there were no reports of serious injuries and/or major damage to homes within the Village.

The Village’s Water Department during the entire storm event kept close watch on the various Water Well sites to ensure that they were operating properly.  For a short period, several wells were on emergency generator power that required personnel on site every few hours until restoration was made by PSEG.  The new SCADA (Supervisory Control & Date Acquisition System) provided to be a tremendous assistance since the Well sites could therefore be monitored and adjusted remotely.

Old Westbury Pond Beautification Project:

This long-awaited beautification project is moving along well.  The majority of new plant material are doing well.  The final step will be the installation of new “Post & Rail” fencing around the entire pond.  This work is scheduled to begin toward the end of September / early October.

Annual Village Elections:

Having received the required Independent Nomination Petition, the official ballot for this year’s Village Election is completed with the following names from the Old Westbury Party:

  • Edward Novick / Mayor for a four-year term
  • Marina Chimerine / Trustee for a four-year term
  • Andrew Weinberg / Trustee for a four-year term

The election will be conducted on Tuesday, September 15th between the hours of 12noon and 9PM for residents of Old Westbury who are registered voters with the Nassau County Board of Elections.  Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the Village Election are available at Village Hall, 1 Store Hill Road.  The Village must receive this application by September 8, 2020 if the ballot is to be mailed.  For personal application, the deadline is September 14, 2020.

Public Meetings:

Public Meetings for all three Village Boards (Planning, Zoning and Trustee) are scheduled to now return to being held in public at Village Hall while following the CDC Guidelines.  To meet requests of all interested parties, efforts are being made to also have these meetings conducted via a “Conference Call” as well.  Details of this will be included in each Board Agenda that is posted on the Village website.  The September meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Planning Board: Tuesday, September 8th at 7PM (Labor Day is Monday, September 7th)
  • Board of Zoning Appeals: Monday, September 14th at 7PM
  • Board of Trustees: Monday, September 21st at 7PM
